FAU Study Pinpoints Non-Fatal Overdose Hotspots in Palm Beach County

Non-fatal overdoses happen far more often than fatal overdoses, yet little is known about where they occur. A new study found that nearly half of overdose hotspots in Palm Beach County significantly overlapped with gas stations, while others followed major transportation corridors. Nearly 40% of overdoses occurred outdoors, with outdoor overdoses strongly associated with housing instability, lack of insurance and younger age. People experiencing housing instability had five times the odds of overdosing near a gas station, offering new opportunities for targeted, place-based prevention.
