Protecting Infants Before Birth: New Evidence Reshapes RSV Prevention Strategies
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) remains a leading cause of severe lower respiratory infections among infants, particularly during the first month of life, due to immature immune defenses. Previous studies show that immunoprevention strategies targeting pregnancy and early infancy can substantially reduce RSV-related hospitalizations and severe disease. Maternal vaccination during late pregnancy enables the transfer of protective antibodies to newborns, while long-acting monoclonal antibodies administered directly to infants provide sustained protection across the RSV season. Together, these approaches offer complementary and highly effective tools to close the vulnerability gap in early life, reducing disease burden, easing pressure on healthcare systems, and improving infant survival outcomes in both high- and middle-income settings.
