CHLA-Led Behavioral Health Team Receives $6.4 Million Research Grant for Clinical Trial on Combined Treatments for Pediatric Anxiety
The new clinical trial will explore how the antidepressant fluoxetine, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) that works by increasing activity of serotonin, the mood-regulating chemical in the brain, can be used on its own or in combination with cognitive behavioral therapy to effectively treat pediatric anxiety. While Dr. Peterson's previous research has shown how these treatments can address anxiety symptoms over a short period, the new study will shed light on the long-term impacts of the treatments, which will be helpful to families deciding between various treatment options.
